PTFE teflon tape works by creating a tight-fitting seal or "skin" around the threads of various types of connections in pipelines and air ducts. In addition to serving as a deformable filler to help prevent leaks in certain applications - provided that the plumbing tape is thick and dense enough for this - it also provides lubrication of threaded connections. This lubricating effect is due to the very low surface friction of PTFE (in fact, one of the lowest friction coefficients among all known solid materials). Thus, the correct application of PTFE tape can ensure a tighter thread connection at the pipe connection and in most cases should prevent them from jamming if you need to unscrew them at some point in the future.
